International Trombone Association Review!

"Certainly there are special people in every field of endeavor, but there is one category of these folks that we affectionately call "living legends".  So it is with this historic recording of Ron Kischuk's Masters of Music trombone ensemble featuring the trombone playing of "living legend" Curtis Fuller.  At the age of 80 when this recording was made in 2012, Fuller steps up with a freshness that belies his age.  With an unbelievable resume of musical performance with such jazz giants as Dizzy Gillespie, Kai Winding, Art Blakey, Benny Golson, and the Jazztet.  Fuller is still working as a performing musician and more than holding his own.

The arrangements for this album are superb, and the rhythm section is right on in a generally supportive role with occasional short solos and tasty fills.  Fuller is a featured soloist on Yardbird Suite, Alamode (his own tune), It's Alright With Me and Straight No Chaser.

The backing trombone section plays as though inspired with fire and drive when called for on Yardbird Suite and It's Alright With Me.  Then the ensemble shows sensitivity and expression on Enigma and Heaven.  The balance and intonation are wonderful.

There is much to enjoy on this fine recording with the showcase of Curtis Fuller's talent.  Thanks to Ron Kischuk for the concept, and for capturing these historic performances to the delight of trombonists everywhere." - Stan Pethel, International Trombone Association Journal 2015.
